What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. This rapid turnover creates thick, scaly patches called plaques that can appear anywhere on the body but most commonly affect the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
While there's no cure for psoriasis, modern treatments can dramatically reduce symptoms and extend the time between flare-ups. At St. George Dermatology, we develop customized treatment plans based on the type and severity of your psoriasis, your lifestyle, and your goals.
Psoriasis affects roughly 3% of the U.S. population. It's not contagious, and with the right approach, most patients achieve significant improvement in both appearance and comfort.
Types of Psoriasis
Plaque Psoriasis
The most common form, causing raised, red patches covered with silvery-white scales. Typically appears on elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
Guttate Psoriasis
Small, dot-like lesions that often appear after a strep infection. More common in children and young adults.
Scalp Psoriasis
Red, itchy patches on the scalp that may extend beyond the hairline. Ranges from mild flaking to thick, crusted plaques.
Inverse Psoriasis
Smooth, red patches in skin folds—under arms, behind knees, groin area. Worsened by friction and sweating.
Treatment Options
Topical Treatments
Prescription-strength corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, and retinoids applied directly to plaques for targeted relief.
Phototherapy
Controlled UV light exposure that slows skin cell growth. Effective for widespread psoriasis when topicals alone aren't sufficient.
Systemic Medications
Oral or injectable medications that work throughout the body to reduce inflammation and slow cell turnover.
Biologic Therapies
Advanced injectable medications targeting specific parts of the immune system. Often highly effective for moderate-to-severe cases.
